Interesting map - light pollution

Here's a map you might not have seen before:

It shows sky darkness, or intensity of night-time light pollution. The URL above shows an area including Philadelphia, New York City, and Atlantic City. The Pinelands area is clearly visible. It's one thing to read about the importance of the Pinelands, but seeing this map gave me a whole new perspective.

Any thoughts on what is causing the light pollution just north and east of Jenkins on Lake Oswego Road? Is that the field study station? If so, they need to reorient their lights to face downward.

Yes, officially the "Philip E. Marucci Center for Blueberry and Cranberry Research and Extension, a Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station". lat=39.71543 lon=-74.51046. Sure looks like they have some serious lighting wattage there.

Perhaps they need that much light to tell the difference between the cranberries and the blueberries?

Oswego Lake is very good for capturing the Milky Way, other hostspots are the ball field at Belleplain State forest, and Spring Hill. I have yet to make the trek to Cherry Springs State Park in PA but that location is one of the best on the East Coast. Hope to see your astrophotography photos on this forum! Good Luck!

Oswego Lake is very good for capturing the Milky Way, other hostspots are the ball field at Belleplain State forest, and Spring Hill.
