Its a Frog Slog!

I posted this in the events, but realizing time is short , I thought I should post it here as well.

The Citizens United to Protect the Maurice River and its Tributaries, Inc. is holding a frog slog this Friday night at 7pm at Bennetts Mill in Vineland. Its off Union Rd near Bear's Head Rd.
Don't forget rubber boots, bug spray and a flashlight!

I haven't had a good plate of frog legs since Sweetwater Casino burned down!
They were a classic dish at the Sweetwater German. If I remember correctly, they always threw one in with the surf and turf combo.
My son wants to try gigging again this year when the season reopens on July 1.

We are not going to hurt the frogs. I am bring some audio and a camera. I am hoping to see a PBTF.

I know you weren't planning on harming the frogs. I am just a d#ck that likes to stir the pot whenever the occassion presents itself.

On a more serious note, if that's even possible for me, the link below will give you some of the hotspots for the PBTF. The study was performed by the Pinelands Commission in 2001. A few of these spots are within walking distance of my house and they are very active areas.

If you decide to check the "Chew" spot, use caution. The "wonka wonka" might be drowned out by the 'Woofa Woofa" from the junkyard dogs on the other side of the road.
:)
Enjoy !!

Thanks Scott! I know a few more ponds then shown here but this is great info.I know of one pond not far from turkey point, wouldn't think of that area as the Pines would you? but it is a very small section of pine barrens habitat sandwiched in an area totally unbarrens like.

If you need some other areas let me know but I have been to a few of these and they are good spots too.

I will be tree frog hunting this week most likely with Rob from work.

A little tip. If you have a cell phone, iPod Touch, or iPod, download Whippoorbills tree frog sounds from this site and play them while at the locations. I have done this and it actually starts them honking. Here is the link where I store them on my photo site. The number 2 one works well.

Thanks Rednek. I did enjoy. The more I see, the more I want to see. I hope to visit some of them soon. I have some audio recording equipment to I can record the calls.

I don't know if you have this or not but the Calls of NJ Frogs and Toads CD is excellent. You can order it along with the Field Guide to Amphibians and Reptiles for $19.95 here:
http://www.conservewildlifenj.org/store/books/
The CD is temorarily out of stock, according to the website but you can get on a notification list via email.)
While your at it, you would surely be interested in the Field Guide to NJ Damselflies and Dragonflies !

Guy,

I believe thats true. for when we were out the other night, there was a Whip-poor-will that started calling and it was after that, that we heard the frogs really get going.

I purchased the Dragonfly field guide from PPA at Lines on the Pines, its always in my car. Nice color photos with county breakdown. I like it.

Oh OK, WOW, that's what I get for reading too fast. My bad. Anyway we were half way around the pond when we heard it and them more frogs, but that could very well have to do with the fact it was dark enough to be calling then.

The Fringe tree is at Union and Bears Head, I had heard there was one out there. it is fully mature and you can see it from the road. Not sure if its private property or not, (there were no signs there) but I ducked back real quick and took some pics. Today I was at Branywine in Chadd's Ford and Bowman's Hill in New Hope PA, I saw Fringe Trees in both locations. We dont have them in Atlantic County that I know of.

Thanks Rednedck, that was interesting reading. I didn't realize that they were so many "hotspots" for PBTF. Some of them are in walking distance for me too. I have a retention pond right behind my house which has several species of frogs in it. I have been able to identify the spring peepers and gray tree frogs. This spring has been dry so it wasn't until a couple of weeks ago that it actually had water in it so there is much less in there than there was the last couple of years. Being so close to the "hotspots" I am sure that there has been a PBTF in there at one time.

I know where union is and I have heard the term bears head used in that area but other then the small stream known as bears head branch i know of no road known as bears head.Is this fringe tree where bears head branch crosses union road? That is straight up oak/pine barrens in there. There was a house right there well over one hundred years ago on old maps but I never could find a cellar hole.Perhaps this might be left over from the old house shown on the Hartman maps? Some nice old stones in that area as well.
