I remember being young in NY and it being "their time". They were so bad on the eaves of our garage that my pops used to spray ether on them, wait until they fell and set them on fire. We still had millions of them.....

They are still very active around me, but the sound is coming from a different direction now so I guess they're continuing to emerge. They sound much closer now. Just returned from my evening walk and I could hear the song of a single cicada on my property down by the creek, but couldn't quite zero in on it. They sing the loudest in the late morning so I will have to return and have a look then.

I just saw one up close! And I didn't need to go searching around the woods, I was standing in the kitchen looking out the window and eating an orange. One flew right up to the window and got caught in a little spider web. It struggled for about 30 seconds then broke free and flew away. :)
