I just drove up to NYC on the Parkway today for the first time in awhile and was looking at the ~20 mile long construction zone South of Toms River where they are clearing the shoulder. Are they adding a lane or just clearing a larger shoulder?

"The forested land, off Turtle Creek Road and next to the state's Swan Bay Wildlife Management Area, will be open to the public for hiking and nature observation."

And no doubt forever closed for fishing, hunting, trapping, and other no-impact public wilderness uses. I'm eagerly awaiting the new parking lot, interpretive kiosk, ranger station, restrooms, and gift shop!

At least you can hunt Swan Bay WMA and this acquistion will provide additional adjacent habitat.
You can also bank on birders knockin' a few quackers loose too, which is a plus if you're right next door.

As Bobbleton said, they're adding a lane. More specifically it's part of a multi-year widening project that extends from Toms River at MP80 to Somers Point at MP30. The first phase is from MP63 to 80, then the second will be from 30 to 63 (to start sometime in 2011).

The Mullica River bridge construction is a part of the widening project too. When completed the existing bridge will carry southbound lanes once rehabilited, while the new bridge is going to carry northbound.

Well, that's good news! Here out west things tend to be "preserved" to the point of keeping everyone out except a few elite folks. I USED TO live just up the road a piece from the Swan Bay WMA. It was formerly privately owned as a hunting preserve.
