All,
Took off yesterday to get that last seasonal paddle in on my favorite stretch of the Mullica. There was no way that the weather could have been more agreeable. I took with me a friend who also happens to be my wife's pastor.
a young pastor my age and while I do not attend, we have become extremely friendly. he's just a likeable fellow. He is from the Long Island area originally and has not really been on a canoe in years, and never Jersey. Our start was great, the water up, and in the whole of the trip we saw only two other folks so the time to enjoy quiet as well as conversation was with us.
A couple of stops here and there to walk off in the woods. I was pleased to show him the Pleasant Mill and share some history. Out at the Sweetwater Casino it was cool to see so many boats still in as people are just hanging on the this good weather I suppose. The beauty of the Forks and a chance to share some history again made for good going. A lower tide and a stiff breeze made for a workout going back up from below the Casino but my friend was up to the task and we enjoyed the sun on us and the breeze keeping the sweat factor down.
I might have offered to a couple of paddlers here to join but I am never 110% sure on the go till the morn even though I had the canoe loaded over the weekend already. I also had a feeling it was to be a good day for just two.
In the end though it was quality time spent with The Mullica, an immeasurable fine day, a wonderful companion who I would not have traded on this last paddle, and just some collecting of the mind. I'm glad it was just he & I.
Even the ride to & from in my less than luxurious S-10 yielded pleasant time.
I brought him By Lake Nescochaque for a look and then a short trip to Batsto.
We bade goodbuy at home, I unloaded and then took the mounting rig off the truck. While a flow of melancholy was on me while doing this task, I am excited now to have my little truck ready for the cleanup so it's all good.
I hope where ever you were what and whatever you were doing you took yesterday as the gift it was.
Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the post. I've been trying to get in that "last paddle" but my last 2 Friday's off have been really windy and I hiked instead (which was not a bad thing). I'm going to try again this Friday. Not sure where yet.

I'm glad you got to enjoy such a great day, I had to work :(.
But after work I paddled around Mirror Lake (in Browns Mills) for a few hours before dark, so it wasn't a total wasted day.:D I live on the lake so its always there for quick trips.
Enjoy the nice weather while it lasts!

So how did the good Reverend like it?

My Priest from Whiting used to come to Bamber and paddle in his little rubber kayak on Bamber Lake.

Ahhhh! Sunny, sun-drenched autumn days. How can you beat them? I ask you Sir, pray you answer me if you have an inclination to do so (and have the time to do so good Sir).

Pastor, but, close enough. Friend to me though. He truly enjoyed himself.
We talked on many a topic of like and unlike interest and sometimes briefly didn't talk at all. Both mediums suited us fine. Everyone, has "hectic" in their life, especially someone who embraces and interacts with people as much as clergy who actually care. At one point he indicated to me that for the first time in a long time, he found he wasn't thinking about anything tangible, wordly, even the usual stuff we all think on. college, mortgages, not fun things, etc.
When I could I just wanted him to chill & kick back and when I needed him to paddle he did so willingly and well! Scarcely a bird in sight so it was darned quiet. A few turtles here and there and one that let us get right up to it without plopping in. He did give us the stink-eye the whole time though. My friend enjoyed the fall beauty but I couldn't help thinking that while I was admiring the artwork, he was admiring the artist. we both commented many times on our fine weather day but once when beached for a stretch, I said "looks like somebody's on our side today"
He just smiled.
