Some pics from my hike last thursday and friday. Found someones camp in the woods. I also woke up to snow. I will post more pics later.

This is the remains of an old shelter we used to camp in when we were kids, not much left after 25 years. It was old when we found it.

This is the first view of the camp I found.

some views of the interiors and extieriors.

This is an under ground shelter complete with fireplace, it had a small stove pipe flush with the ground. Not for the claustraphobic. The tracks in the area were 4-10 days old. having not been around for the weather it is hard to date them. Nothing to fresh but it was still creepy.

Plenty of food for thought here--glad you took them. A hundred questions arise, but for now, I'll ask only one. How many (average-sized men) could fit into the underground hideout?

Looking forward to your snow pics.

some snow pics from last friday morning, it had rained most of the night and was raining pretty good when I woke up. I had just managed to get enough fire going for a cup of coffee when the first flakes started coming down. A nice, if wet surprise.

trip

Grendel, that looked like quite a trip, having run into the surprise snow. It didn't really accumulate too much where I live, but it looks like there's quite a bit on the leaves there. Nice camp with just the tarp. Tents weigh too much for backpacking and the really light ones are either crap, or too expensive. My last set up was a tent rain fly, and a really small pack hammock. Those shelters looked pretty cool too.

Where was that camp and underground shelter in the woods, I'd like to see it? You don't have to be specific, give me an area to explore.

Great pics Grendel. Reading of your encountering the shelter reminded me of a similar experience years ago in the woods in New Hampshire. I was about five or six miles in and came upon a lean-to, and an old battered tent. The site was pretty trashed, lots of detritus of daily life lying around, laundry hanging up, etc. And a small fire smoldering in a rock-lined pit. Not a soul around, but I didn't stay long. It felt very wierd. Not sure exactly why. I was alone, and I suppose it was background fear of what kind of people would squat out in the woods, and how many of them there might be.
