Ben and All,

I did a little investigating and found some info on the stream gaging station on the McDonalds branch in Lebanon Forest.

http://www.njpinebarrens.com/~teegate/gage.JPG

It first went into use in October of 1953 and records have been kept there ever since. It has been assigned the Station number of 01545600. I also found mention of a hike in Lebanon on October 26 1953 where 51 people led by a Jack McCormick had lunch at Deep Hollow Pond while listening to a talk by member of Rutgers University on the on the possible ecological implications of prescribed burning and the plants of the Pine Region Hydrological Research Project. They then were given a tour of both of the newly erected gaging stations by Henry Barksdale of the USGS.

Your photo of the gaging station is cool, Guy. Looks like a nice place to visit. I bet the water level is at an all time high.

The Deep Hollow Pond looks like it isn't too hard to get to, with route 70 close by. I think there's a development near Presidential Lakes. I better watch out; snakes tend to show up by developments. :) Sorry, I just couldn't resist...

All,

I was in contact with the man who last painted the stream gaging station at the Mount Misery Brook in Lebanon State Forest.

http://www.njpinebarrens.com/~teegate/gagestation.jpg

He painted it in 1967 when the station was closed down except for a brief reactivation in 1977 for a year. The daily flows for that station when it was in operation are here.

He also informed me that the geodetic markers there were used to see if the gaging station was sinking so they would have an accurate reading of the water level. The man's last name is the same as a member of this group which is the person who was going to go with us to Pasadena to show us the "real" site. I have asked this man I have been corresponding with if they are related.

BTW Ben, the link problem is OSX related and not any particular program I have. To put the above link into this letter I was not able to paste it into any of my programs without the problem happening. If I paste it directly into this post it works fine.

You're quite the detective recently! :)

How do you find these people?

I just look into the crystal ball and they appear, unlike my car! Maybe Monday.

Seriously, I went to the USGS website and found a cool email address that seemed to be the correct person to write and I was wrong. But the woman was nice enough to forward it to the proper person and he wrote me. Below is his complete letter. Hopefully the link will work.

Guy,

The gage you found is the discontinued gage 01466000 Middle Branch Mount
Misery Brook at Lebanon State Forest, NJ. The paint that I put on it in
1967 when I operated it, doesn't look to good. That gage was discontinued
in 1967 and reactivated for a year in 1977. The daily flows are available
at

http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nj/nwis/d...huc_cd&list_of_search_criteria=search_site_no

The benchmarks at our gaging stations are not all tied into a datum such as
NGVD of 1929 or NAVD of 1988. The marks are thereto check whether the gage
is settling. The records for these reference marks are mostly paper copy
only. You would have to ask us for marks near any of our gages.
