Okay, this might be fun, or this might just be tedious.

Who can identify the largest contiguous cedar swamp in the pinebarrens?

the rules:
1) It may be fragmented by savannas or bodies of water or dirt roads/highways but not development or pine forest or maple/gum forests.

2)the pine barrens area will be defined by the entire area encompassed in the Pinelands National Reserve, so start looking you south of the A/C expressway guys and girls.

3) exact dimensions do not need to be given but a aerial image is a good idea for comparison.

I, do not know the answer but I have some ideas.

Let the game BEGIN!!!!!!!!

Very interesting challenge Jeff. I'll have to think about this. I have 4 ideas right off the top, but I don't want to just throw areas out there. I'd rather investigate a bit.

I would have to go with Great swamp of Sleeper creek fame.I have just scanned all of south jersey and while there are swamps bigger then the great swamp all of these are predominately maple.the great swamp cedars section of it not including medders or pine swamp is 2.2 miles northeast to southwest and about .6 miles across east to west.I can find no other strictly cedar swamp that large. There is a swamp called "great cedar swamp" that stretches across northern cape may county but it is not really a cedars swamp.I have crossed it and there are pockets of cedar here and there but it is predominately maple and so is the timber beaver swamp further south which is actually flooded in it's lower reaches by clint millpond dam and makes for a real nice wade.gices you that cypress swamp feeling without the knees. If someone can find a pure cedars swamp in south jersey larger then the Great swamp i am all ears.

Al, that was going to be my first candidate for the title but I got too tired to post it last night.

the bear swamp would be a good contender as the largest swamp 9non cedar) if the sand plants hadn't of mined a swath right across the center of it.it was originally 5.7 mi long by 2.0 mi wide and it is mostly maple, gum beech.it now has the east and west swamp both about 1 and three quarter mile by 2 mi.the swamp at one time must have been truly a monster by jersey standards.I'm sure the sand companies wiped out many behemoths since the ones left are quite near the sand pits for the most part.

Boys, I'm not in total agreement with the Great Swamp of Sleepy Creek. That mother of a swamp behind the resevoir on Haines property (Hauken Run) is thick with cedars, and it extends below the resevoir.

And, it is contiguous all the way to the Wading River proper. That is a hell of a big cedar swamp.

Say Boys, did you ever see that satellite imagery of "Gigantic City"? It is at a creek called Deep Run that runs into the Egg Harbor River. My oh my! That is an interesting place. On the photos is looks like the creek is a huge spring seep. We should cross that one day.
