Last time I seen one was at the Medford WMA about 25 years ago but the doe was not all white just some of her................................. Ever see a Leucistic white-tailed deer? Now’s the opportunity to visit the Cape May County Park Zoo to see Cotton, a very rare specimen that is totally white with blue eyes.
Students who participated in the Cape May County Student Government Day Tue., April 24 were among the first to learn of the creature from Parks Director Michael Laffey.
Laffey said the odd deer is approaching his first birthday, and can be seen at the zoo’s North American Prairie area with the rest of the white-tailed deer and pronghorn.
The zoo received the deer from the N.J. Fish and Wildlife. Cotton will mark his first birthday in June, Laffey said.
Laffey explained that a Leucistic deer is often confused with an albino, which has pink eyes. Leucism is defined as the absence of pigmentary skin cells. They retain pigment in other organs such as the eyes. Because of that, Leucistic animals have colored eyes, he continued. “In this case, Cotton has blue eyes. Albinism is defined as the absence of melanin producing cells. Albino animals can appear diffusely pale-white and will also have pink eyes as melanin is the primary pigment in the iris of animals.

A bit north of us, in NY's finger lakes district, is the old 11,000 acre Seneca Army Depot that has a large herd of leucistic deer living within its boundaries. They used to give tours and a group is trying to have the old depot turned into a preserve of sorts. Worth a visit for anyone in that area.

I have heard of the term Leucistic in reference to snakes but never mammals. In snakes it is an all white snake with black or normally pigmented eyes unlike albinos who have clear (blood red) eyes and their normal pattern is visible but washed out and pale a leucistic snake is pure white.Leucistic texas ratsnakes are big in the herpetoculture trade.

According to the University of Minnesota, pink eyes are not a must for albinism. Bookmarked this sight a few years back about a herd of white deer in northern Wisconsin. Found it interesting. They're called the Ghosts of the Forest.

I used to do summer training in the national guard at fort seneca in the finger lakes area of MY.The security was very tight because they store nukes there in underground bunkers.the area is triple fenced and monitored by camera heavily. They have a deer population inside the fence that are heavily inbred because no deer can get in and none out.Every deer there is either a calico or albino and from what I understand they have a plethora of health issues. We used to see them everytime we drove in and out of the base. Then they attached us to the 82nd airborne div. after we were used by them in desert Storm and we started doing training in Fort Bragg after that.
