Ummm.... Guess you didn't notice this, but at least one generation ago, the authorities began using piloted aircraft of various types for law enforcement, search and rescue, etc.

Since we are here discussing the matter, it would appear Civilization-As-We-Know-It has survived.

Apart from being non-piloted, or remotely piloted craft, how does the use of drones for the same purpose differ ?

If they were not called "drones" would you feel better about them ??

I am aware that the Supreme Court has ruled that American citizens do not have a right to privacy when they are out in public and that aircraft can be used for surveillance without a warrant so long as they are not penetrating the walls of buildings with infrared or other technology that allows them to see inside. I agree that drones could be useful in search and rescue missions and to track illegals crossing our borders, and probably in some other applications. But the feds say that they expect to authorize the use of 30,000 drones over the next 10 years, and they will mostly be used for surveillance. There are not 30,000 piloted surveillance aircraft in use today, and I expect that there would be a public uproar if there was. I don't want to empower government to maintain that level of surveillance on me. We already have cameras all over the place video-taping our movements. Now we're going to have them flying over our heads? Honest men can have differing opinions on this and I respect that. For me, cameras in the sky being used to track my movements and activities is not what I envision in a free and open society. It smacks of what one would expect living under totalitarianism, not a constitutional republic.

"It would appear Civilization-As-We-Know-It has survived." Well now that is debatable. :D

Privacy is dead already, regardless of whether you see drones circling overhead. How about this? http://gpstracklog.com/2012/04/how-...phones-location-without-a-search-warrant.html

When your handset is powered on, it connects to nearby cell towers to signal its proximity, so that the towers can rapidly route a call when it comes through. Law enforcement can use pen/trap devices to monitor these connections, or “pings”, to pinpoint the physical location of the handset, sometimes within a few meters. And although Congress has made clear that pen/trap orders alone cannot be used to authorize this sort of location surveillance, it hasn’t yet clarified what type of court order would suffice. So, although many courts have chosen to require warrants for location tracking, others have not, and the government has routinely been able to get court authorization for such tracking without probable cause.

Here's a list of how location data is being used in different NJ towns from the ACLU link in the article above (click on "Response to public records request" for your town): https://www.aclu.org/protecting-civ...-phone-location-tracking-documents-new-jersey

Just one of many reasons not to use a cell phone. After all, it is just a personal convenience, and apparently for the authorities as well.

Braveheart was on yestereday :)

46er using your computer gives the more info then your cell.
It is still the best ticket in town (America)

Only if you allow your computer too, and by computer I mean the so-called smart phones and smart cards everyone likes. Its a very simple thing to protect ones computer from prying eyes, I used to do it for a living. The marketing stuff I could care less about.

Absolutley, just want to keep it that way ;)
