I am new to your site. Been living and driving the pines my whole life!! Have been reading some of the post and i am not surprized to hear of all the wildlife in the pines.
I have personally stumbled upon plenty of wildlife domestic and wild ,traveling the back woods. I own a 1980 Jeep CJ7 and have been on almost all the trails in the pines. Been stuck alot too!!! Have hiked the entire Batona trail in 4 Days! Read
all of Becks books and have seen the ghost towns Charles talks about. The roughest
road was the Great Swamp until the army Corps bulldozed it during a fire back in 98.
I live on the North Branch of the Rancocus and love the Area. For the first time in a while i have the privilege to enjoy the company of a pair of river otters that tend to
sun themselves across from my house! Wish the best to everyone and remember when traveling the barrens " Be Prepared for anything!!!!" Carry plenty of fresh water, Stay warm, and be ready to walk a long distance for help! Jeff :D

I did about thirty miles of the Batona Trail in the Scouts, but the whole thing in four days? Sheesh!

I agree with the exception of one time. I got lost and wound up at some military installtion with NO TRESPASSING "BOMBING AREA" I had to go back what appeared to be at least a mile in reverse.

Russ does the whole Batona in three days--every year this time. They are doing it this weekend. Start at Bass River, camp at Buttonwood on Friday night, hike to Batona, camp out there, then hike up to Ong's Hat on sunday. Two years in a row I've tried to make it but both years wound up with bronchitis and couldn't train. Maybe next year. :?
