Mac user’s.

Anyone have the new Mac operating system yet? The girl’s and I went to the “party” at the Apple store last night and purchased it. After loading it in I noticed it was somewhat slower as I guess should be expected. All of my previous programs seem to work with it, so that concern seems to be mute.

As for features, the changes are not big, mostly cosmetic changes to make things easier or more interesting. For example, “Cover Flow” makes it easier for me to see anything in a particular folder. This photo shows what is in my “Four Watersheds in a Day” folder from a previous PBX hike.

Congratulations on the upgrade Guy. But you're a braver man than I! I always wait quite awhile before upgrading my operating system, often until I buy a new machine with it pre-loaded. But I'm running a number of high-end applications for video, database and 3d modeling, so they can be finicky. If it ain't broke, I don't fix it :)

Here are some early reviews:

Apple is really on a roll these days and is now the #3 computer maker (HP is #1 and Dell is #2) with a market share between 6% and 8%, depending on whose numbers you look at. But their share of laptops is nearly 20%. These numbers may not sound too impressive until you realize that they have nearly tripled in the last few years. For some more info, see the following from Investors Business Daily: http://biz.yahoo.com/ibd/071023/tech.html?.v=1

Apple has been outperforming the PC industry as a whole by a wide margin in recent quarters. Its PC shipments were more than double the industry growth rate of 15.5% last quarter. In fact, Apple's PC shipments have been more than twice the industry rate for the last five quarters, according to IDC.

Apple has been gaining market share without resorting to price cuts as other PC makers have done to raise their market share, analysts say.

I installed it -- running great so far on an old minimum requires Mac. Time machine alone seems worth the upgrade price & I can see how coverflow can actually help productivity (and add some fun) - gotta luv Apple (eps if you have held the stock for any time).

Go to System/Library/CoreServices/ and scroll to CoreTypes.bundle. Right click and choose “Show Package Contents”. Then click Contents/Resources. Once there click on some of the icons and you can see the new 512 pixel icons. Really crisp and clear. Here is the home folder icon.

Before diving into an upgrade, you might want to read this first; some good suggestions for avoiding potential problems: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20071026082852658

there is a school of thought that says you should never, never, never do a "basic upgrade" installation - that such an installation is, indeed, the root of all evil. Not only do you inherit a lot of old stuff that may be incompatible, but the algorithm whereby the installer "merges" your existing system with the new one is not reliable. The majority of troubles reported in MacFixIt may well stem from having done this sort of installation.

Unfortunately, this sort of installation is the default; most users don't even realize they get other choices.
