I saw the sap vacuum setup they have installed at Batsto the other day, it's really neat. Never seen something like this before. The whole thing is powered off a deep cycle marine battery. Stockton should definitely post some more information about how it was built and the overall project it's part of; there are really only some signs describing how maple syrup is made.

Are they tapping Red Maple? Sugar Maple doesn't grow in the pines unless planted in someones yard
I think I heard once that Swamp Maple (Acer rubrum) could produce sap, but the season would be too short to utilize it.
Yes Red maple also produces sap but it is more watered down.Takes much more sap to produce a gallon of syrup then Sugar maple does.You can make sugar with Birch as well
We made sap from red and silver maple when I was a kid. Most every tree you can make syrup from takes far more sap than a sugar maple. There had been one semi-commercial sugarbush up near the Water Gap, but the season in NJ starts far too early and ends too soon to make it more than a hobby.
