I left home at 9:00 this morning with quite a few places to visit on my agenda. The air in my car was on full blast, it was hot and humid, i brought a lot of water knowing even though i can only go on very short walks, that it may become overbearing. My first stop was on Chatsworth-Pasadena Road to view another Geodetic Marker. After a few minutes of scraping the ground i viewed the following Marker.

After covering back up the marker, i got back in my car, drank some ice water,
it was then on to Greenwood Forest to visit a place i have not been to for way over a year, the Atkerson Graves. Here is the first pic.

Then a second shot of the grave site.

Then backtracking i decided to revisit the Van Note Camp, on the way i took this pic of the site of the Wheatland Manufacturing Company, first called the Townsend Clay Manufacturing Company established in 1866. This site is on private property.

Then on to the Van Note Camp to retake a pic that i wanted to show everyone from my first visit there. Here is the pic.

I got back in the car , consumed another pint of water, then it was on to the Batsto-Washington Turnpike, i wanted to view a property stone there, but while existing the car, i noticed on the trail a White SUV blocking the road sideways, further investigating i noticed the driver side window was spider webbed with a hole in the middle of the window, going back to my car with the intent of informing the Rangers at Batsto, another White truck was pulling into the small road with a man and a woman in it, i inquired if they knew who owned the truck and lo and behold the woman got hysterical, it was her stolen truck. I told them my intent of going to Batsto, but they thanked me and she got immediately got on her cell to call her lawyer.

Leaving the area i then went to the Batsto Fire Tower taking another marker pic. Here is the pic.

I then got on Bulltown Road and on the way i took the following pic of this abandoned house.

I then had one last place to visit the site of the Bulltown Glassworks, turning left past Bel Haven Lake off of Rt.542, i went with my car as far as i could go on the road, i still had a tenth of a mile to go to the site, exiting the car, i viewed this on the way.

Arriving at the Glassworks site, i took the following two pics. Here is the first pic of the site.
IMG_0548_1.jpg

I did find some old bricks there but no glass slag. The second pic.
IMG_0549_1.jpg

Walking back to my car i wanted to view the stone i saw a little closer up,i cannot make out the letters on it.
IMG_0551_1.jpg

Arriving back at my car, i took this pic of this foundation.
IMG_0552_1.jpg

I got back in my car consumed some more water, then decided to head home, on the way i noticed three people getting out of a van parked at the entrance to the Hermann Glassworks site, i proceeded on, i was hot, tired, and reeked of permanone and Deet, i did stop briefly at my friend's house in Tabernacle for some cold Buds. What a hot, humid day in the Pine Barrens.

Jim,

A well rounded day for sure. And hot!

You missed two markers at Batsto. One is about 100 feet away from the one you photographed, and the other is the Azimuth that I found after finding a map that shows where it is. It had not been reported on since 1957. The main station (triangle on it) is flush with the ground on the right side fence a few feet from the fence. So if you are on the paved road, walk around the right side and go toward the back corner near the fence. It is covered over at times.

Here is my report on the location of the Azimuth. You will have to try to find this one on your own. I am removing the coordinates :)

STATION RECOVERY (2005)

RECOVERY NOTE BY INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTORS 2005 (GJT)

THE AZIMUTH IS SOUTHWEST OF THE STATION.

'TO REACH THE AZIMUTH FROM THE STATION, PROCEED SOUTHEAST TO THE PAVED ROAD A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY. TURN RIGHT AND GO SOUTHWEST LEAVING THE PAVED ROAD AND CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON THE DIRT ROAD FOR ABOUT 400 FEET TO THE AZIMUTH ON THE LEFT. THE AZIMUTH IS 26 FEET FROM THE CENTERLINE OF THE SAND ROAD, 2.5 FEET FROM A 8 INCH PINE, AND PROJECTS 2 INCHES.THE COORDINATES FOR THE AZIMUTH ARE XXXXXXXX

Good luck and here are some clues.

The Azimuth.

Thanks for the tips Guy, next time i am out that way i will try to find them.

Any info on that concrete marker on the way to the Bulltown Glassworks ?

I had my kid eye over it and it looks like the initials n m with an 8 below it, is that a property stone ?

Off hand and without checking my records I don't know, but you should look 8 feet away for a stone. It may be there, gone, or buried.

I had the Green Bank and Jenkins Quad maps in tow with me, i was also looking for other markers in the area, did not see anything, they are probably buried or stolen as you stated.

I bet it's still on his lot. Nobody's buying 15MPG vehicles thesedays.

I went past the dealership a few days ago, it is gone, either some fool paid the price, or, since it was sitting on his lot so long he sold it to an auction place.

Thank you again for your expertise on the matter.

Great pics and an interesting outing, James. I will need to get back to the UCW area to view those graves, since I missed them last time.

Bloody hot yesterday, and I decided to head up to Pahaquarry instead of the pines because I thought it might be a little cooler. Did one two mile trek through heavy woodland looking for an old cemetary, and was amazed at how winded I was at the top of every rise. Went through three pints of water. Seemed like the ticks were just as uninterested in work, though, which was good. I ended up spending most of the rest of the day cruising around taking pics of abandoned farms, often with the AC running. Guess I am not very hardy :).

I'm in the same boat. It's just too hot to be in the woods now, in my opinion. Especially the kind of exploring I like to do, which is far, far away from where other people would be. I'm always worried about the heat getting to me.

Most of my explorations this summer will be on the water, I think.

Thanks Mark, all the best in finding the grave site.

Ben and Mark, i drank six pints of water yesterday, i almost gave it up after the site of the Townsend Clay Manufacturing Company, i was soaked with perspiration, the only thing that kept me going was the car air conditioning, hardy i wish.

A hot day in the pines is invigorating if you enjoy what your are doing and the day is going well. If I was able to go there every day this summer I would be there. Unfortunately, many things dictate my decisions.

The arrow on the No.2 Batsto disk, that is pointing to the Azimuth mark ? Why the slash mark in the middle of the arrow ?

The Reference Mark arrow is not pointing to the Azimuth, it is pointing to the "Station". The station has the triangle. That is the important one. Years ago before they had what I will call modern surveying, they had to put the reference mark monuments there so that if the station was damaged or moved they could use the reference lines to replace it. But with modern technology the reference marks are obsolete.

I wrote a post a few years back on how the station and reference marks were placed using towers. Interesting stuff!
