Memorial Weekend Exploring

All,

Today, Jessica and I checked out the cement monument that Sue Gremlin found last weekend on her travels in the burned area. On two of the sides are letters, one side inscribed LEH, and on the opposite side are the letters EW. So what do they mean? Well, at one time Burlington County had a straight border from the Trenton area that extended all the way down to West Creek, but at some time in the past the border turned more southerly in the Warren Grove area, and now extends towards the New Gretna area.

The portion of land that is no longer Burlington County is now Ocean County, and the original Burlington County line eventually separated the townships of Little Egg Harbor, Eagleswood, and Stafford township. So it is easy to figure out that the LEH stands for Little Egg Harbor, and the EW stands for Eagleswood.

So with this in mind I felt there had to be some more of these, and using an educated guess we set out to look for it. This involved a mile walk each way through the burnt woods of the pine plains about 4 miles away. The weather was hot with no shade obviously, and it was slightly uncomfortable but invigorating by the end.

Along the way we found these.

Finally we arrived, and sure enough we had made a good guess. I had to manually adjust some of these to get a bright photo because of the angle of the light. Sorry for the flush look.

This particular one also had a crude S inscribed into it for Stafford Township.

And this was 15 feet away.

It is very encouraging to see that even after a fire as hot as this one, the ferns in low area’s where the fire was intense, have already grown 1 foot tall in just over a week. Amazing!

On our ride home we came across a red-bellied turtle.

As Jessica picked it up she scared the piss out of it...literally. Look closely.

Great find Guy,did you know previously that these markers existed?

I knew where the second one most likely was, but I did not know what was there. That area was a very dense scrub pine area, but with the fire I was able to drive my car deeper into the woods than I could before, and the mile walk was much eaiser due to the burn. Sue's find just turned my attention towards it since I don't usually explore in that area.

The area she found hers in had people all over the place at 9AM this morning. There were people swimming already! Too many people for my comfort, so the deep woods exploring was more to my liking. The less people the better.

Guy, I am so happy you were able to figure out what that marker was. I am extremely impressed with you and your piney psychic abilities. I will pay closer attention to these things from now on. :)

This info from wikipedia will give the month and year when little egg harbor township seceeded from burlington county and joined ocean county.

Nice one Jim! So now we know the date. Did you notice that mentions the Fighters shooting the school? :)

Sue...I had some help on this one so I can't take any credit for your find. The second one was just an educated guess. No psychic abilities here! That would make my life easier though :)

Sorry for the delay on the repost, but this nasty storm happening here now in philly keeps kicking me offline.I wanted to mention and say great find Sue.To Guy,there is another website i was on about 6 months ago that goes into what entity caused the little egg harbor secession,i will try to find it shortly, basically it was about one senator or congessman who started the drive to switch county affiliation,it was politics as usual also back in those days.I also need to pm you Guy for some advice about what i came upon on my outing today.

For the first time in a while I had to shut my computer down because of the storm. The lights went out for a second here and shut all my appliances off. For about 1 minute it was quite intense here.

Lights did not go off here, but the wind forced me to bring in from the front porch all the memorial day decorations, very quickly, also when i came in the house i had to calm my dog down,16.5 years later and she still freaks out from the thunder.

The fern against the burned landscape will make for some great photography.

Guy, I'm disillusioned now. I thought you were like magical or something.

This fire is such a great opportunity for you guys to find things the pines have hidden for so long. So what is next now? Anything else that's been eluding you that you can seek before it's re-hidden?

Nothing magic here for sure. My family will vouch for that :D

I really don't have much info for anything in that area so anything I search for would be just guessing. Maybe someone else has something to look for and will find it. I did notice that right near the monument you found there are buildings mentioned on the topo maps. I was going to go there and see what was there, but as I said there were too many people around for my liking.

Nice work Guy - you had a productive day! We didn't even have a hint of the rain or storms at my place yesterday, which seems like a common pattern. I spent the day grilling and partying at home.

Heh, a chance find of mine the other day *might* have enhanced Guy's psychic abilities :)

Perhaps the slightest possibility of some more stone bases to add to the Sawmill thread ?

G.

I looked for one but it appears it is not there. I think one member here knows where there are a couple of them. Not near you though George.

I guess this is not the best time of year for finding things. You may have to wait until the fall.

As for Boyd's post, yes he followed in Sue's footsteps and unbelievably stumbled onto the monument she found.
