I was told there was a baseball field near the old Maplewood in Atco on the WHP near the firestation over 50 years ago. Does anyone have any info on this? Also, I live off Pestleton Rd in Waterford and was doing some woods riding back behind Wharton Run and was wondering what that open field is in the middle of the woods? Does someone farm in the middle of the woods? It's not far from the woods off Fleming Pike. Thanks for all your help! Are there any other metal detecting folks out there?

Guy....that's it. I just think it's weird that there is an active farm back there. Thanks for your help!

I looked around somewhat and came up with the answer. That is private property and consists of 16.1515 acres. When the state purchased Wharton in the 50s it was owned by someone named Grosso. There are a few state corners there that I will have to look for one day.

Guy,

What map was that information derived? That type of map could help immensely with my metal detecting.

It is just one of the many maps I have acquired over the years. I use them for my hobby.

The State misspelled it Guy. It was and still is owned by the Grasso family. It is actively farmed, usually in field corn.

Thanks Scott! I have heard of that name before being in the area.

I just got into the hobby about a year ago, my problem is finding a place that isn't illegal to hunt on. Almost every place that I would love to hunt is private property or state land which forbids it without a "permit". From what a lot of people on other websites tell me, the places in the pines have been pretty well picked over in the 70s, thats not to say that there isn't still stuff to be found out there, but I ain't risking it.

I asked about the permit thing and the only place Wharton will allow you to collect is Atsion lake beach.Everything else they deem historical and it's hands off so apparently it is in the interest of archaeology to allow all these metal artifacts to lie in the ground and quietly corrode into nothingness.I hate to see the things we need permits to do ten years from now extending possibly even to bodily functions.

Amen to that! Its a shame too, I guess that leaves me out of even trying to get a permit. Good ol NJ

My own feeling is that things which have been lost on public land should be free for anyone to find, and I admit to a little resentment at the idea that lost history is not to be looked for unless you're a professional. On the other hand, I assume that these rules evolved because they had a lot of problems with people tearing up sites looking for artifacts, and I don't know how you maintain freedom and keep the indiscriminate jerks from ruining everything. It's the same old problem.

I know I haven't posted on these forums in 3-4 years now. Anyway, hello and welcome back (to me).

FWIW...

I am a metal detector enthusiast and last weekend I asked a State Parks Ranger about MD in the pines. She told me, all MD on state land is forbidden without a permit. As far as she knew, the only place that was legal to MD even WITH a permit is Atsion lake beach.

For all you South Jersey MD folks, you might want to try Estell Manor Park/Belcoville/Bethlehem Loading Company. If you go to Lake Lenape park office, you can get an MD permit for 1 year for $5 and it is good for all Atlantic County parks.

Good luck.

yes it is quite funny the things your noty allowed to do on your own{tax payed for} property.
I have always toyed with the idea of a coil implanted in the sole of your shoe with a wire running up your pants leg and shirt to a pair of unnoticeable ear phones, kind of a walking detector and keep a garden trowel in your pocket.
But then again that would be illegal so forget it.

if they buy it with your taxes it is yopur property.
Al
Well I know if ya go jump in a state owned(your property) police car and go for a little joy ride they will give you one of those state owned condos.
Just cause they collect tax dollars and spend them like drunken sailors don't mean we get to go along for the party

True enough Al, but how do you isolate that they paid for that property with just your taxes and not the taxes of your neighbors or the families in Cape May or Hoboken? They might not like the idea of folks pokin around on 'their' land. :D
