Middle Road, in Hammonton Tract's “middle” ground, holds a mystery.
On the 1860: Griffith Morgan Hopkins, Jr. "Topographical Map of the State of New Jersey: Together with the Vicinities of New York and Philadelphia, and with Most of the State of Delaware,” the original Middle Road continued straight up to 6th Road. More intriguing, there are map icons indicating structures in extant along its northern route.

Is there any ground evidence that Middle Road was actually improved as such and houses were built? That would imply that remote places like Rockwood and West Mills were on, or at least intended to be on, main arteries in the time of Landis & Byrnes.
Note that even more structures existed along an equally straight Basin Road, which passes by numerous spungs or basins.
