Between this and the Retreat Factory thread, I am starting to think child labor was a good thing.
I think some of the spoiled, snivelling, sulking kids of today, who have never mowed a lawn, shovelled a sidewalk, split wood or took out the trash, could use a dreadful low-paying job as a little wake up call.

'The real world is right outside that door".. as my father used to say.

Some cool old pictures there.

I was in Millville today, and there was a homeless guy crouched on the ground at the bottom of the Rt 55 exit ramp with a cardboard sign that said "No money, no food, down and out."

With 4 more years of you-know-who in charge they'll soon be printing those signs on Tyvek in rolls of a thousand and giving you a complimentary one with your last unemployment check.

Well then it wasn't me. My sign said, "Will work for truffles."

If it is the guy I think it was (was he a young white feller about 25?) then I have given him money before and then watched him.He headed right to Burger King (Now Chic Filet) so I knew he really was hungry and have given him some grub money a couple times since then.I have given beggars money and then watched them head straight to the liquor store also,I remember them and they get no more. There were never any beggars in Millville till I hit around 30 years old except a couple kids in school but no adults, only one homeless guy back then.Cat Man and old guy that lived under Brandriff street bridge occasionally.

Sounds like the same guy. When I was working in Philadelphia, one day there was an old woman next to the PATCO station with a sad story about how her purse was stolen and she just needed enough money for a ticket to get back home so I gave her a few bucks. A few days later the same lady was back with the same story. :)

The Library of Congress is a terrific site. Unfortunately many items have yet to be digitized and are only able to be viewed in person. I hope that the staff will spend more time scanning historic maps, adding them to the online catalog. The overall collection within the library is massive.

Supposedly, the Westboro Baptist nutjobs were going to protest the funeral of a soldier at Millville yesterday. Anyone know if they showed up?

why would anyone protest a funeral? What do they aim to accomplish?Getting the body thrown in a dumpster>What is Westboro baptist? are they anti war hippies?Showing your ass at a funeral is a good way to get invited to your own.Emotions are already on hair trigger at such events.

They have been around for awhile. Over 10 years ago my daughter was in the play "The Laramie Project" in college. They showed up in large numbers. I remember one of the signs said "Thank God for 9/11".

Not gonna comment any further though, cause of the whole political thing. :)

Over the last two months I have been hit up for money by two men and one woman, all with the same story. "My mom is in the hospital in Atlantic City. Can you spare a few bucks to help me raise the bus fare so I can go visit her?"

Unfortunately, most people who approach you in parking lots and ask for money are going to use whatever money you give them to buy drugs or alcohol. If you want to offer them help, the best thing to do is to offer to buy them a meal or some food. Giving them money only feeds their addiction and downward spiral.

very true Old Crazy but I don't trust them enough to let them in the car with me and I know most of the locals and who the drunks and junkies are.I won't give anyone "bus fare" because that is so over used. There is a guy who begs at 7th street laundromat and uses that all the time.He needs bus fare to get home to Camden. He lives right down the street and if you listen to him he knows everyone that walks in and doesn't beg off the local hoodlums,I live five miles away and he don't know or remember me.How does he live in Camden and yet knows everyone that walks in and everything thats going on in town?I also give no one money whose sneakers cost more then my whole wardrobe.I am pretty good at picking a hood rat out from a genuinely homeless person. That guy up by Walmart is dressed in old dirty clothes and he looks tired and hungry, not in tip top shape with a bounce in his step wearing hundred dollar sneakers. In any case if I don't know the person is a drunk or addict or just plain bum I will give them something so on Judgement Day no one say I was hungry and you didn't feed me.Rather be a sucker then a scrooge.
