A quiet area of forest nestled in a protected, ecologically sensitive corridor of the township could become a busy sand, gravel and clay mine.
Representatives of Peg Leg Webb LLC received preliminary approval for the proposed mine from the township Planning Board in August and hope to dig a 65-foot deep quarry off Bowman Road near Patriot’s Park.
But environmentalists and a neighbor are calling for a halt to the project, contending the area is habitat to endangered and threatened species and plays an important role in watershed protection.
Township officials and environmental leaders cannot agree whether the lot, which is located in a patchwork of protected land called the Toms River Corridor, is open to mining.
