All,

With a few places in mind to visit today, we first headed to the Rockwood area to plant the trees Jessica acquired at the “Lines on the Pines” book signing. We also were going to trim a few blueberry bushes there to see if the plants we cut will produce this year. Along the way we visited the Boot Hill Gun Club area and noticed that right along the road at 206 there is some sort of very small ruins consisting of mortar and sandstone. Has anyone noticed these?

Then to Rockwood. As we were searching around to plant our trees, and cut some blueberry bushes, we found this photo nailed to a tree with a turtle below it. Maybe someone died there???

This was on a tree nearby.

Then to the beaver dam where the Never Wet is starting to show.

The yellow looks like it was coated on like chocolate or wax.

It’s everywhere.

While planting our trees we dug this grub up.

Supersize. Click the photo to enlarge it.

Our next agenda was to check out a small piece of Wharton that very few people even knows exists. It is not marked on any topo map that I have viewed; however, I have this. Notice the acreage.

It is located just off Bards Bridge Road near Forked Neck Road just off of Carranza. Much of the property in that area is private, and it took us a while to decide the best way to access it where there were no private property signs.

There should be three property stones there and finding them was our main objective. The first one is semi close to the road. This shows the state monument and the damaged stone.

The second one was along the bog bank in a cedar swamp. The bog bank mentioned in the second photo above can be viewed in the photo below behind the stone.

And the third location only had the state stone.

IMG_1444.JPG

We did not go to the last one since a back yard of a house meets that corner; however, right close to the property line there we found a really deep cellar hole and evidence that many years ago this was a well used home site.

Real nice trip Guy, Fred Miller told George and i about the ruin along Rt.206 when he showed us the location of the property Stone last Summer, we did go to see it after Monument and Stone searching. Fred also told us that it is on his property.

Did you go to visit C.G.R. ?

Nice photos, Guy. I must admit that I like the Never Wet shots better than the grub. Is he a native species? You certainly have a talent for choosing . . . unusual subjects. :D

Is this your new camera at work?

Yes. I am really happy with the macro on this one. Maybe the grub is not the best way to use it, but we see a world we normally don't.

Do you need a separate lens for the macro shot ? (Great detail, by the way!)

No, it is the camera lens. It is a 9MP and I am really surprised how well the macro works on this one. I finally am able to take close-up photo's.

The negatives are the on/off button is next to the shutter button and I am always turning it off when taking a photo. It also is "slippery" and if I don't have a good grip on it I will drop it. I have to always remember to put my hand in the strap especially around water or I will find myself swimming for it one day. And the plastic cover for the cable connection is questionable. I will have to wait to see how that holds up.

Nice report and photos Guy!! I never noticed those foundations by the boot hill gun club or knew of that lot that is part of Wharton near forked neck road. It is interesting that the state owns such a small lot within mostly private land. Is it surrounded by private land?

That photo you saw in the woods...was it very near the road? I am asking because I have seen memorials in the woods but always along (dirt) roadside which I assume is the point of accident/death. Alot of those are ATV related deaths.

Probably in the tradition of J Wharton (Robber Baron) or the man himself. He was a great one to become "resourceful" with ownership of land, when he was actively engaged in seeking to sell his (our) water to Philly. As I understand it, he was reported to have his legal counsellor draw up papers as needed to tidy up his property lines. (Remember, at the time, many transactions were verbal or gentleman's handshake). New Jersey has occasionally done the same thing since they took over the reigns, as it were!

The photo is in the far end of the old blueberry fields. You can get to it from a well hidden road right in "downtown" Rockwood. A vehicle could be driven down there but it ends right at the photo.

My wife's bright yellow kayak is named "Golden Club" after the plant in your photos. Now I'll tell her the alternative, confidence inspiring name "Never Wet" :)!

Nice shots!!

I also have always known it as golden club but I have noticed water rolls right off the leaves and they refuse to "get wet" so I imagine thats where Guy's name for it comes from.
