I found this written in one of my old notebooks. I can't remember where it was. I want to think it was somewhere near Martha. Is there anyone out there with knowledge of Monumentation in the Pines?

Was the Pope Catholic? Does a bear poop in the woods? Are there stars in the sky?

If so, then, ask Guy.

Thank you for the confidence Bob, I appreciate it. Because of that I will not let both of you down.

First let me explain again some of the meanings of the markings on the state markers. Obviously, the NJ stands for NJ, but what does the other stuff mean. Well, the next number (440) is again obviously the 440th marker. But the next two letter on your marker tells us that it was the 440th marker in Bass River township, which means it is an "R" and not a "P". (NJ440BR)

Now on some markers below this info you will see other characters. If you see a number such as 8, or 10, or 12, you will also see a slash next to the number. That means you look that many feet in the direction of the slash and you will find the native stone that was placed there by a previous property owner before the state purchased the land. Sometimes they are even underground but don't go digging if you don't see it. It may be long gone. Cover up anything you uncover!

You also may see the letter "C" which I saw for the first time this weekend. That means it is a corner marker. I have seen some corner stones without the "C" and they just have angles at either 90° or some other angle.

So where is your marker? Well, it is as you say near Martha. It is located at what was and may still be called the Cutts Brothers cranberry bogs. I would assume it was called that at one time, and it is no longer that, but I may be wrong. And BTW there is not a native stone at your marker.

The coordinates are:

In D/M/S

39°41.06.41
74°30.04.48

and in minutes:

39°41.107
74°30.075

Since I gave you this info we all expect a photo when you find it :) That is your payment.

Good luck, and if you are interested there is another one nearby. Write back if you want that info also. And we expect a photo :)

This episode of "Marker Man" brought to you by NJPineBarrens.com :D

Always the jokester :)

BTW, we all make mistakes, and there is one in my above ramblings. It is not the 440th marker in Bass River, it is just the 440th marker that was monumented.

Pretty cool, thanks. I'll snap a pic of it next time I'm out that way. As my wife was reading over my shoulder, she remembered it was near a clearing with some dirt hills. She remembers in the distance was a cranberry bog (or what was) & rusted old truck (burned & then left for dead).
Are you a land surveyor? (Don't worry, I won't ask you to rerun my outbound!)
Anyway, thanks for sharing!

I am not a surveyor. I research, search, and learn.

You are welcome. Enjoy!
