Moore property

I was in the woods yesterday and ran into some friendly hunters. In our conversation, it was mentioned that Sam Moore (Moores Meadows) recently purchased more land and had set up poles to block entry to areas of the woods previously accessable. This would have been along the western edge of his current property. Apparently this occured within the last 4 or 5 months.

This surprised me because I thought it was all state land in that area, and I don't believe the state can sell it's land to private interests without extreme difficulty. There might be misinformation here. Has anyone (this means you, Guy) heard of any of this?

I would need to know the area in question and I then could let you know what info I have on it. There are times when the state will do land swaps with individuals to get lowlands and in exchange will trade uplands, but I doubt that occurred. The land may have been private property where the owner let anyone use, and not that it was sold to Moore he blocked it off. And we have to consider the hunters may have been in error.

it's funny this came up.just yesterday i was talking to a bird hunter i ran into in the woods and he began talking about the land south of buckshutem road the state sold to the motorsports park and the land the state sold to hansens sand company north of ackley road.I told him i didn't think the state could legally sell WMA land paid for by hunters to whom ever they chose and make a profit off of it.It is now owned by the public. He informed they they could and do reguarly.I didn't argue but I know for a fact the land he referred to along buckshutem road never was state. It was owned by the city of millville and adjoined state land.Millville sold that land to the motorsports park and has earned my undying enmity for doing so.
the sand company has always owned that land north of Ackley road but never posted it.it also asjoins state land and folks hunted it at will. The sand company tried to swap it with the state for some other land in bear swamp i believe and that didn't happen so I guess they got mad and have now heavily posted what has always been their land but is shocking to people who have hunted there for years under the assumption it was stete.I knew better because i have found every state monument deliniateing that border. If the make a and wash there it will ruin a right nice piece of woods complete with a small vernal swamp.Looks like I'll have to find some tiger salamanders or something out there to prevent that:)

So I went to the same area of the woods today that I visited on friday to see if there were any new postings or anything. Walked out on a frozen bog also.

Anyway, I pulled down one road that I knew was gated at a certain point as it ran into Moores property. I stopped a little short of the gate and was hiking on a nearby rise when a truck pulled up behind me. I went back to my truck to move when the person got out and began asking if I was looking for an area to set up a stand.

I told him I wasn't a hunter and was just looking over the rise. I noticed he had a state forestfire service shirt on and I mentioned it. He said "you know it's all private property back in there" and I said "yeah, that's Sam Moores property". At this he looked surprised and said, "that's me, I'm Sam Moore."

It was Sam Moore the III. We ended up in a very interesting conversation, standing there in the woods, for nearly an hour till it was too dark to see each other. He is a real nice guy. He was patrolling the property boarders for hunters who might be moving onto his land.

I learned alot and he is a tremendously friendly guy, once he knows you aren't tresspassing or considering tresspassing. To answer the question that this post was originally about...They (the Moores) did in fact just purchase an additional 80 acres from a tax lien that now connects two parcels they previously owned. This brings their holdings to nearly 800 acres. The family hunts A LOT on their property and are particularly concerned with outside hunters moving in. he bagged a coyote this season which he is having mounted.

he is also a forest fire warden. he is 7th generation Moore on the land and it has been in the family since 1840!!! He is very proud of the fact and rightfully so. They once had holdings of 2000 acres but it was divided among family members and the bloodline has been lost on some of those properties.

We talked about many things related to the woods and the area. We also spoke about the closing of Moores Meadow road: They were having a tremendous amount of trouble with quad riders coming through in large groups (up to 32 riders) at all hours of the night and riding off the road into the bogs. They tried to mediate the problem in several ways unsuccessfully. Eventually irrigation sprinkilers were being stolen and gas (from the farm pumps I presume). At the urging of Haines and with the blessing of the twp, they closed the road with great reluctance. He said they originally just posted it, but that only kept law abiding people out, so they eventually gated it. He explainded that they didn't want to but had no other way of correcting the situation. He aplogized for the inconvience of it and said he felt bad that people like myself couldn't utilize it. I told him I understood.

He extended the offer that I could call him whenever I wanted if I had questions about property lines...his or anybody elses as he said he was very familar with all the holdings in the area. He also had some ideas for some PBX hikes. Good ones too. It is good to know that some of these people who own large parcels of the pinebarrens really appreciate what they have.

Jeff,

You may remember Sam Moore was the one who saw the bear in the tree on Savoy Blvd when he lived there.

Also, I suspect I was at the new property he purchased. You can read about it in post 47 at this link. You my remember us discussing this area.

I had forgotten it was Sam Moore who saw that bear. I would have brought that up to him if I remembered. I hope he didn't aquire that old road there in your post #47, as I use that one from time to time. I think they aquired land a little south of that. I will contact him because, while Bens map is very accurate, I am sure the updates aren't that recent. He ( Sam)said he would show me on a map, I would really like to know, I think they just posted the property lines so I will go check it out myself first.

I dont think it was that road. I may have some of the corners to that property. I will try later today to come up with them.

What do you mean "they just posted"? Does he have a website showing his property?
