Just got some inside information. I discovered that both Atco Raceway Motocross and Englishtown Motocross have lost their insurance policies. I heard that from too many claims the insurance company said see you later. Neither one has insurance right now. Evidently it only keeps them from having practice sessions and not actual races. So the races are still good to go. I know a lot of people practice at Atco and love the lights there so they can ride at night. Just an additional problem when trying to have a facility such as an ATV park and such. The only reason why I post this message is because those are 2 places that support a lot of riders and if those tracks go away that means less places to ride and IMHO could make some riders more prone to switching to the woods. Just to let you know, Atco Motocross rents the land from Atco Raceway. Basically the dragstrip has little to do with the motocross track. :(

The insurance industry, and peoples greed, are ruining this country. Thanks for passing that on.

On a semi related story I talked to a cranberry bog owner a few months back who has a gun club on his property that he rents out. The members of the gun club pay the bog owners insurance company to use the building, but the insurance company has been very upfront to the bog owner that they would prefer that he not rent the building out at all. They are so afraid of someone getting shot in the building or it burning down with the members in it.

One day the insurance will be so high for gun clubs they will not exist just as it appears has happened to motocross locations.

sigh... if you don't like something, just legislate it out of existance by way of the lawsuit...

I'm sure they also had to battle people who just moved into the area who suddenly discover that oh horrors, they live by a noisy motorcross park and that it just can't be, after all they just spent all this money on a place out in the country, all those bikers are the wrong element, can't have them around, it will bring down property values... never mind that the track (and parks) had been there first. :jeffd:

Insurance is a problem. Sanctioned races mean the promoter has the liability insurance requied by the sanctioning body. Allowing public access increases the risk, and the cost.

I still belong to my father's motorcycle club. We own a site just for a race we hold twice a year and when Moto cross first took off we gained alot of members who pushed to make a moto cross track for sanctioned races.

They wanted a place to practice too & the club's general policy covers that. First race just happened to have a fatality & that was the end of the moto cross; the club could not buy the needed insurance anywhere. A promoter tried & couldn't make enough off the gate to keep it going so the club members ended up w/ their own private track...They have a close to urban area where we can target shoot, camp, ride bikes, hunt, members only. The club still pays a good amount for the other races and only deals w/ an insurance broker that understands the clubmembers have to be allowed to 'play' any of the remaining 50 weekends of the year.

They are fortunate that they were able to find a broker who understands that not everyone wants to live wrapped in bubble plastic so thar they would stay absolutely safe; I imagine they still shell out a pretty decent amount for insurance tho'.
