Newfoundland has been on our to do list for several years but now Momma is pissed we need passports. Last time we went to Canada it was easy getting in but they ran us through the mill getting back into the states.easier to get in if your mexican.

We got the passport card. Limited in where it can be used, but we're only going to Canada :D Just fill out a short application, get a photo, pay the smaller fee and its delivered in about a month.

Is it any harder to get a real passport? I got one when I was a kid, let it expire, renewed it in the 90's and again around 2006. It was really quite simple. I am not much of an international traveller (although I just went on a business trip to Canada), but it makes a great all-around type of ID. Seems like a good thing to have in general, just in case some opportunity to go abroad pops up one day. :)

Don't know, don't need one of those. The card was easier then renewing a NJ drivers license  The book is quite a bit more pricey though, almost 3 times as much as I recall. The card can be used to apply for a book if the need ever arises, but by then we'll probably have a world guvmint.

Well, in my case, if I didn't have a passport I wouldn't have been able to take that job in Canada when it was offered at the last minute. :)

Before you try to get a passport make sure your birth certificate has your parents name on it. If not, you will not get one. If yours doesn't there is a place online where you fill out the form and send your original birth certificate and they will acquire it for you, or you can get it at the town you were born in. My wife recently got her's and did the online route and it worked well. My brother also used it just to get the birth certificate and not a passport.

My birth certificate does not have my parents name on it so I have to either do the online thing or go to a few miles and acquire it.

You will need a certified birth certificate, the one with the raised seal. Easy way to get it is check at your county clerks office where born if your young enough, otherwise you have to go thru the state. Ocean county clerk did the whole enchilada, will even take the picture, but it costs. We have AAA and they do it for no charge.

I got my international passport in 2007 or so. It was $65? and lasts 10 years. It is good to have I think. I've only been to Germany and Canada so far (years ago).
