Pinelands Paddler took me for a canoe trip in the area yesterday. He showed me Mordecai Landing, Batsto Landing, and some canals on the Batsto that were obviously generated for some type of industrial use. We paddled upstream to Batsto and ate by the mill. We just sat down next to the sawmill sluiceway when they opened the gate for the saw. Very neat. I had a great day in the sun on the water. Gabe swam underwater in several areas that were deep and filled with tree limbs. Doing that is a fear I have, but he did it no sweat. Here are a couple photos from the day:

Nice shots! Looks like the water level is high up there, was just noticing my creek is the lowest it's been since I moved here a year and a half ago...

Boyd, the tide was at its peak when Bob took that photo. It's tidal all the way up to Batsto village.

Thanks for joining me, Bob. A great time as always. I have to admit that swimming under water like that is still creepy for me, but I'm getting used to it.

Oh by the way, both of us got chigged good. We walked to a sandy spot that led out towards 542. I stopped and told Gabe..."check yourself for chiggers". He did and started swearing. I looked down and I had 'em too. You know those convertable pants than can be unzipped for shorts? I had them on, and they are the worst thing to wear when in chigger season. They all headed up to the zipper area and starting getting in that way. I picked off at least 50, then we both got back to the river fast. I scrubbed all my clothes in the river and picked more off-and some of them survived the multiple dunkings. I spent the rest of the day in my underwear (solid green microfiber, it was hard to tell).

I don't know about Gabe, but I survived without one bite.

Then, last night, Guy and I went to Westcoat bogs. When I got home I had a couple on my face, but they had not bit. I survived without a bite. Very lucky.

Why is it that chiggers seldom bite above the waist line? At least that has been my experience.

I

I would say that it is because they usually get on around your lower legs and then find no reason to go upward beyond your waist. That being said, I have come back with chigger bits on my arms and torso after riding on tight enduro trails, where they tend to initially get on a bit higher up than hiking.

Fishladder

Nice. Does the fishladder at Batsto Lake work? Anyone check it out in the spring when the herring are moving upstream to spawn???

Bob, why don't you post a pic of you in your green underwear? You got a lot of stares and smiles from the ladies at Batsto, if I recall. :D

Bob is really starting to worry me.
This is the second trip that I am aware of where he has a found a reason to end up in his skivvies.
The other occasion, that I was a party to, resulted in several grown men floundering through the Wading river in their Underoos while carrying backpacks above their heads..
I keeping an eye on you boy.
:D
