Mystery solved.

While kayaking the Cooper this evening something in the sky caught my eye. It was not a bird nor plane. It was, apparently, a shipment of balloons headed for the Pines. I've always wondered why we find so many of those damn thing in the Pines.
Sorry for the bad photo.

question about the cooper

I live in West Berlin, right around the corner from Ott's Greentop. I was just wondering if you knew exactly where the Cooper began. I am familiar with the Cooper through Cherry Hill, Haddonfield, and on to Camden but I am not familiar with the headwaters, although I know it goes right around Berlin, Gibbsboro etc. just curious. Also is it possible to paddle the entire length of the Cooper?

If you look at a topo it would seem that the Cooper begins behind the quarry in Gibbsboro. I have no idea what it looks like there but I would imagine it's just a trickle. I've only kayaked the section between Kaign Ave and Grove Street. There are other sections that can be paddled but I doubt that the entire length could be done because of all the development that has gone on near it.

While kayaking the Cooper ....

see any bodies floating in the river....did you count the syringes and crack viles...LOL

The Cooper is not the cleanest of rivers, that's for sure. But if you can look past the beer cans and occasional tire it can really be quite beautiful. There wasn't much wildlife there yesterday but usually there are dozens of egrets there along with a few GBH, cormorants, ducks and of course geese. I've seen a few turtles and the fish are always jumping. It's also fun watching the kids practice rowing and the folks learning to sail. Another nice thing is that since it is wide and straight, you can really get some speed up for a good workout. Oh, and it you are into jetliners, that's the place to be. It seems they use the river as a guide when lining up for landing. There is a constant stream of them. Oh yeah, if you are into sunsets it's also great for that. When I go on the Cooper it is usually after work and I stay on it until sundown. There are usually other kayakers and an occasional bass boat plying the banks. It really is very nice.
