All,

Early this morning Jessica and I headed out to the area around Devious near High Crossing to search for any remains of two buildings that are shown on maps of the area. They are the two black dots with the arrows below. I came across High Crossing and tried to drive there in my car but was blocked by a very large puddle that also had stooped a 4x4 who arrived just before us. So I headed up the back road toward Devious as far as I could go and walked. We walked past Devious and made a right and I quickly realized by looking at my GPS that their location was right along the Batona trail. So we headed up the trail and eventually came to the first location. Ten minutes of searching turned up nothing so we headed toward the second. This location is about 300 feet from the Batona, and just a short distance off of one of the roads in that area. At this location I was able to find the spot where this building was located. It appears it must have been just a hunting shack that was either all steel or had a steel roof. There was evidence of screening and old rusted cans along with bottles there. The map is deceptive because there are no roads leading directly to these places.

Here is my tracks with 157 and 158 as the area in question.

All that remains at the second location is a small rise around what appears to be a non brick foundation and a depression in the middle.

On our way back on the Batona tail we ran into a snake.

Guy,
I went looking for those same two buildings about six months ago but didn"t have a gps then and didn"t find them plus I had my wife in the car and didn"t want to wander too far.
I second the snake ID.that is a real purty specimen of a northern pine. This has been a super poor year for me finding snakes.I"ve only seen two this year.a baby pine at a den I know the location of.that was in march and the babies were just starting to venture out on a 50 degree day and the second was at simms boggs/papoose branch where I saw a black rat snake full grown.Lizards are noticeably scarce too on the other hand I"ve been seeing turtles everywhere.water turtles laying eggs over a mile from water and just plain turtles everywhere go.

A few months ago Renee and her family, and I, found a Pine Snake that had been hit by a car and killed. It was on 563 in Atlantic County, about a half mile south of the intersection with 624.
It's the only Pine Snake I've ever seen.

Guy,

I have been to Devious with Behr and we came in from Carrenza rd. to Tuckerton rd. and made a right onto a road that is not on a map. The road to the left is though and called Bulldozed rd. We then made another right and drove to Devious without any trouble the whole way.

Ken,

I have been to Devious many times, but I was not able to get to the locations I wanted with my car. So Jessica and I walked. In the end both of the locations I was going to was right along the Batona Trail so that made it easy.

BTW did you ever look for the 3 Geodetic Markers on Devious?

Guy,

No, I didn't know they were there. I have found 2 on Mt. Holly, but only by accident. Yes I said on Mt. Holly, there is a big hill in Mt Holly. I huffed and puffed all the way to the top, in the heat of the summer.
