I'm trying to give my self a crash course in plants of the pine barrens. I am familiar with most common stuff. I went to a site and took pictures of everything I saw.

The habitat i walked in was very upland, mostly open canopy. When it was closed canopy, the under story was dominated by huckleberry.

I am not a plant person but I know a few things. I successfully Identified most everything I took a pic of, but these ones i had trouble with. I'm using a combination of the internet, and the Howard Boyd field guide to id everything. I Probably could get better Resources.

plant 1. ground covering?

plant 2 I found this one a couple times. seems common

plant 3. is this just really young heather? it looks nothing like the big stuff. really short

plant 4. dunno.

Also I would take suggestions for a really good free online resource for identifying pine barren plants. Field guide suggestions would work too. thanks.

This is a friend of many of us here. Click on "Plants of the NJ Pine Barrens" and the links there are perfect for what you want.

#2 looks like chokeberry or blueberry, #4 is sumac. I second Tee's online guide selection. Another good site at the link. Might stop at Buzby's in Chatsworth for a paper field guide, and if you have a smartphone, there are app's such as Leaf Snap, amongst others.

both those websites seem very useful. Next time when I'm in Chatsworth ill see what they got at the inn.

Checking what German said, #1 and 2 and 4 look positive to me. I'm still confused about 3#. it does look like hudsonia ericoides. I don't know what the second pine barren heather is called though. I think there are 2
