FRANKLINVILLE, N.J. - April 25, 2014 (WPVI) -- A new forest fire is burning in southern New Jersey, even as crews have subdued four others that broke out since mid-week.

The latest fire was reported around 11:00 a.m. Friday in Shamong Township in Burlington County, where 50 acres of the Wharton State Forest have burned so far. The Jersey Forest Fire Service expects it to spread to 200 acres

The new fire came as crews gained control over four other blazes, fanned by strong winds.
In Franklinville, Gloucester County the White Oaks wildfire is at 50-percent containment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and so far it has burned more than 550 acres.
The fire began around 6:00 p.m. Thursday. Overnight fire crews dug trenches and set controlled burns, and by mid-morning the fire reached 50-percent containment.
According to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, the bulk of the fire burned on state property, but crept dangerously close to about 60 homes.
There were no evacuations or homes damaged.

A big cloud of smoke came up from the south and the ash was heavy, burnt pine bark that did not crumble when I picked it up . The smoke is gone now.

On my way at 4:45 pm to NJMP the smoke of the Shamong Twp fire appeared to be generated in the direction of Hampton Furnace. A Park Police SUV blocked the entrance to Hampton Furnace Road from 206.

Yea, it has to be directly down East Stokes along the road to Hampton. I had to smile when the article said it was in a very very remote place. People go there all the time.

The wildfire was at the Railroad and Stokes Road to Ice Box Road. "The Springers Brook Wildfire"

Nah, been very dry and when it's that dry and the wind is strong and gusts over 30 knots it's def a danger zone. Plus there's still so much dead wood down from Sandy. Probably idiots chucking cigs out their windows.

04/25/14 @ 1100 hrs- SECTION B1- Shamong "Springers Brook Wildfire" in Wharton State Forest off of Stokes Rd near the old railroad line. 2 air tankers are now working the fire. 04/24/14 @ 1800 hrs- SECTION B7- Berkeley Twp ***MAJOR WILDFIRE*** "Crossroads Wildfire" area of Dover Rd and Rt 530. Spotted by the Lakewood fire tower, crews are curently working a 219 acre fire burning towards a swampy area. No structures are in the area. Crews working throughout the night. 04/24/14 @ 1200 hrs- SECTION B7- Beachwood/Berkeley Twp ***MAJOR WILDFIRE*** "Continental Wildfire" off of Pinewald Rd in Fisher's Pit at the end of Continental Ave. Last reported size was about 307 acres. Structure protection was in place. Initially some evacuations with 40 homes in danger. Air resources worked the fire. Crews continue to strengthen containment lines. updated 04/24 @ 2200 hrs Status- 100% contained @ 2200 hrs at 307 acres​

04/23/14 @ 2300 hrs- SECTION B10- Old Bridge Twp, Runyon Watershed off of Old Waterworks Rd- B10 crews have contained a 4 acre fire in heavy pine forest. A plow line was put around the fire last night. A crew monitored the fire overnight and continue to pump on hot spots this morning.​

04/23/14 @ 1500 hrs- **MAJOR FIRE** SECTION C3- Downe Twp "Railroad Wildfire" near Dividing Creek Rd & Ackley Rd. Div C crews currently working a large fire in a remote area of the Edward G. Bevan WMA. Air tanker Charlie 2, Jet Ranger Delta 2 and Huey Delta 6 worked the fire. Ground crews are burning-out. Expected to be about 1,500 acres after burn-out. No structures are threatened. Some road closures in the area. Updated 04/25 @ 2200 hrs​
Status- 100% containment, 1,500 acres​
