CHATHAM TOWNSHIP - New Jersey's Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is being expanded by 27 acres.
The additional property was acquired in a $700,000 deal brokered by the Trust for Public Land.
The land was formerly a privately owned hunting preserve. Officials said the Chatham Township property could have been sold for development.
Terrance Nolan, state representative for the Trust for Public Land, said Tuesday that money for the deal was secured through the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund in an effort led by U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen.
The nature preserve now totals nearly 7,800 acres in Morris and Somerset counties, about 25 miles west of New York City. It was established in 1960 and is administered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
