I was poking around in the Historic Map Archive trying to see when Union Clay Works, etc. first showed up on maps. I downloaded the Finley Map of 1831 and it shows a town called Union where Chatsworth is today.

So my theory is that the town of "Union" inspired the name of "Union Clay Works", which was probably headquartered in present-day Chatsworth.

I wonder when they changed the name to Chatsworth. Maybe when the railroad came, or mabe the Postal Service mandated that they change the name as to not confuse it with the larger town of Union in North Jersey.

I would not trust completely the accuracy of the maps back then, so there is a good chance that Union is the Union Clay Works site just slightly off on the map.
