He had been in prison since June 5, 2012 on weapons charges unrelated to the deer hunting case.

That should read 'deer poaching', in no way was he hunting.

6 months before she contacted authorities?

Wow. It is illegal to sell deer meat in NJ. Hope the restaurants get fined too. People are crazy!

As serious as a crime as this is, the details are comical. I am sure her ears were ringing! Some people....ugh.

Plenty of restaurants in NJ have venison on their menus. As dogg pointed out, it's usually farm raised. My question is how do game dinners at churches and clubs get around using meat from hunters and charging for it? Tickets are typically open to the public. Im not against these dinners in anyway and actually love attending them and getting a true taste of Americana at its finest. Just wondering what the protocol was far abiding the laws.

Mike,

Game dinners have always been excepted for non-profits. Not sure how some restaurants like the Pic pull that off each year if it is in fact wild venison that they are selling.

Here is the text from the NJ Game Laws:

"It is illegal to sell deer meat, deer antlers or any part of a deer except deer hides, tails and the lower portion of the legs. However, nonprofit organizations conducting wild game dinners for social and fundraising events may offer game or furbearer meat (the sale of which is otherwise prohibited) provided that the meat has been harvested, stored and processed in accordance with applicable laws and regulations."

Scott, thanks for the info on deer meat. I go to a deer and beer at Goose Pond gun club in Tabernacle each March and I was wondering what the law was on this activity. I am glad that it is legal.

This reminds me of the discussion of deer poaching in McPhee's The Pine Barrens. (p139-144) :)

When a deerjacker goes out poaching, the first thing he does is to stop at one of the several gin mills on Route 206, which runs north and south through the western part of the pines. There he meets a contact man. Over beers, the two discuss current prices. Carcasses have been bringing about twenty-five dollars in recent years. Then the poacher leaves. It is night, and he moves into the woods in his automobile on the sand roads.

When a poacher has made his kill, or kills, he goes back to the gin mill and has another drink with the contact man. They go outside and exchange the meat for money. Then the poacher goes back inside, as often as not, and drinks up more of his profit.
