The Pine Barrens has a beautiful scent of its own. Pines and cedars give off a beautiful mild aroma year-round. In June the scent of sweet bay magnolia blooms can carry over a hundred feet away. The white blooms of sweet pepperbush fill the roadsides with a spicy perfume during late July and early August. And water lilies give off a potent mango-like scent throughout the warmer months. All this, within an hours drive from Philadelphia and North Jersey. It's surprising to find out that none of these plants are currently protected under NJ state law.(Allen Crawford)
