State officials say New Jersey's black bear management program is working.
The Environmental Protection Department says the number of bears in northwest Jersey is down from an estimated 3,400 to between 2,800 and 3,000.

The DEP also says reported dangerous bear incidents are down 43 percent through the end of October compared to the same period in 2011. Reported bear sightings are down 34 percent this year and damage and nuisance complaints are down 26 percent.
The Christie administration bear management plan includes a hunt, education, trash management and research.
The next bear hunt is scheduled to begin Monday in parts of Morris, Sussex, Warren, Passaic, Hunterdon, Somerset and Bergen counties.
The DEP says 469 bears were Harvest during last year's six-day hunt.
