I believe this to be a Northern Water Snake, if I'm wrong let me know.

You are correct and a very pretty one at that.Commonly but mistakenly referred to locally as a Water Moccasin.
A stinky, nasty snake. I avoid them. Give them a wide berth.
A very accurate description.The will smear you with a very nasty,hard to get off musk and given the opportunity they will bite you.Their not quite as mean as a Black Racer but they definitely stink much worse
Looks like he's got an eye injury. That's a nice specimen and still retains a lot of apparent banding, some of the water snakes that I've seen in the barrens are so stained by the tannins in the water that they appear black.
