Heard an interesting talk on Saturday on how fire suppression is leading to the "mesophication" and disappearance of oak forest throughout the east. It will take some serious adjustment to get us back on track.

I surveyed 20 swamp pink sites this Spring. Many were in Camden and Monmouth Counties, outside the Pine Barrens. It's odd, but it seems fires don't even start there. I wonder why that is. It does not seem like a suppression problem. The vegetation is totally out of control and fires are badly needed to clean up and renew the soil. Same thing in Cape May County. Oddly, even where it's not that choked up, you can tell it's not been burned in years.
