Old Days at the Atsion Lake

Today I am divulging just about everything I remember about the area. I posted a lengthy one in General Discussions but maybe it would have been better placed the legends and lore one. Ok I just wanted to say the in the summer back in the fifties we often visited Atsion Lake to swim. My father enjoyed it because he was born across the street in one of the historic homes there that is now gone. The thing I remember that was a bit different were the changing rooms. The rooms were fashioned by hanging ropes between the trees with Persian designed rugs hanging to form little rooms.

A decade and half later in the early 60's when I was about 16 or 17, I had one of the scariest episodes of my life deep in the Pine Barrens. In Hammonton at the time crusing around town was a huge past time. Groups of girls walking would hop into guys cars to go for a fun ride. Well, one time two fellows drove about four or five of us out to the Pine Barrens in what I think was a Jeep. We took that rode that is along side of the Batsto Church. It probably is one on the loneliest stretches that there is. Today the road is off limits due to a broken bridge. This guy drove out there about eleven in the evening maybe about two or three miles in. We go out and then the guys took off and left us there. We were terrified but after about an hour they came back for us

I laughed so hard when I read that response. I laughed even harder thinking what if it was Boyd in the jeep driving!

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I still remember the time when I lived in Bayville back in the 70's. A friend from North Jersey was visiting and we were driving down a road somewhere in the pines. He said "this looks like a good place to bring a chick and tell her 'f--- or walk' ". That was the first time I'd heard the expression myself.

But no, I never tried that myself. Honest! :D

When you swam at Atsion back then, were there some people who had a little trailer set up near the beach that they sold hot dogs and sodas out of? Everyone called the family "The Gypsies".

The (very small) beach was right off of Rte. 206, and the water was extremely cedar-y back then.

Don't remember that but certainly extra dark cedar water. Also the well water at my grandfather's house nearby had a strong sulfur smell--so nasty.
