Coming to a stretch of the GSP near you, noise barriers. They already exist at the Toms River and Barnegat tolls, and probably other areas as well. All ready for gang tagging.

If the past is any guide, they will probably end up planting several million dollars on landscaping to “beautify” the scar they created, then try to justify another toll increase to help pay for it. :argh:

What they did by Stafford Forge along with the recent horrendous controlled burning they did (burned right to the waters edge) has me once again pissed off. Yahoos are now driving along the foot path by the lake as well.

This is rich. From the below article:

.....Whether or not any trees will be replanted remains to be seen. The state’s No Net Loss Reforestation Act requires a tree to be replanted for each that’s lost during a construction project that is more than a half-acre in size. Project developers also may put money into a fund devoted to planting and buying trees in lieu of doing their own planting.

The Turnpike Authority, however, has said the project may be eligible for exemption because the state’s Division of Parks and Forestry has said the cut trees could classify as a firebreak for the Pinelands."

In other words, a firebreak trumps everything. I could just hear those two beauracrats talking on the phone...."just tell them removing 30 miles of trees classifies as firebreaks. That stops the protests all the time for us".

I guess the two 40 foot wide strips of asphalt already there don't qualify.

Around '92 I seem to recall my father in law saying that he was north bound on the parkway and it was stopped because of a wild fire. He then said he saw it (the fire) "jump" the parkway to the other side and continue.

Is this possible or am I remembering it wrong?

Jeff, it is possible for the fire to jump the parkway. Especially if it's hot enough (the fire), and all it would take is the wind blowing in the right (wrong) direction and some burning embers, dry ignition source on the other side and it most certain could jump the roadway.

As Chrisr said (which I read after I posted this :)), not only can fire “jump” across large openings under the right conditions, but a single burning leaf or ember can be blown hundreds of yards and can extend the fire well downwind. Few openings can be guaranteed to stop a fire but at those locations firefighters are more able to battle them to a standstill or set a backfire. Backfires can only be set upwind of a cleared line, be it a sand or paved road or a plow line. So any opening has value from a forest fire perspective but the amount of trees being removed on the Parkway does not seem to make it a much better firebreak than it was before. It’s just one step closer to resembling how it appears in the northern counties it goes through. Pretty soon the term “Park”way will be as ironic as the term “Garden” State.
