For those who likely don't know, I now work in Manhattan. Before getting on the train to start my hellish 2 1/2 hour commute back home, I noticed a display set up in the waiting area for tracks 1-10 for NJ Transit. It's a mechanical display that has scenes from various NJ sites and attractions. These two are really interesting:

The plaque says "Batsto Iron Works" The wheel on the right spins, and three men holding a piece of iron slide it back and forth under a hammer.

The second is our good friend the Jersey Devil, who flies around in a big oval. The words "Leeds Point 16xx" (I don't remember what the xx's were) were written on his coat.

So there you have it. The Pine Barrens got a nice mention in a display in New York Penn Station that most people probably ignore. The other scenes were Washington crossing the Delaware and an Atlantic City scene complete with Mr. Peanut.

Very nice Ben! Thanks for posting that.

So you take your camera to work, or you took it to work just to photograph that?

Ben,

Consider yourself lucky not to get harassed as us Railfans are now viewed upon as annoying and terrorists. Not too long ago, NJT tried to enforce a policy which stated that no pictures are allowed of their trains, stations, equipment, etc are to be taken from any location.

Some RR fans quickly contacted the Civil Liberties Union and that put an end to that but the policy on NJT stations is no picture taking without their permission. I realize you weren't on NJT property at the time but most, if not all, have instituted policies that are similar. Since 9/11 and the Madrid train bombing, taking pictures makes many people feel uncomfortable.

Just several months ago, I was getting ready to shoot some pictures of a CSX run here and was questioned by the police department as to what I was doing.

Unbelievable. Today I mostly spend time tracing the abandoned rails all over NJ and some parts in NY and PA.

Nice shots!!!
