Pine Insect Damage

I've been coming across a lot of pine trees in the middle of cedar swamps that are dead due to insects. What's killing them I don't know, not sure if the beetle does it or not.

But today, after I saw the first one in the photo below, 50 yards away I see this large pine with holes up to 1" in diameter. I'd hate to meet up with that insect. I've never seen holes this large.

Hmm. I never knew they did that. Interesting.

I keep a suet block sometimes, hanging in the maple out front. The woodpeckers are always first in line, but when the grackles showed up, everyone else backed off.

Yep, it is. Here is another from Lebanon SF. This is an area managed for them behind the maintenance building.

Sapsuckers another type of woodpecker drill their holes in horizontal lines to mine sap from the trees.If you see a tree with stripes of holes horizontally drilled it be a sapsucker.By the way Blue jays will also stash nuts in woodpecker drill holes.
