I am re-reading Forgotten Towns. In The Doctor of the Pines, James Still stated I read by pine light. There was the open fire for illumination, for candles were not plenty.

What is pine light? A search of Google did not turn up anything useful.

I'm guessing he meant that he was reading by the light of the open fire, presumeably in his fireplace, and what was burning was pine logs.

That would be my take on it too. If it's not on Google it doesn't exist. :D
