Southampton - The Pinelands Preservation Alliance has moved its
headquarters from a century-old bank building in Pemberton to a 12-
acre farm here. The nonprofit group, dedicated to preserving the
ecology and culture of the state's sprawling Pine Barrens region,
bought the property in 2002 for $450,000, with the state Green Acres
program providing $260,000 of the purchase price.

The Bishop Farmstead dates to 1740, and the circa-1753 farmhouse is
listed on the state and federal Registers of Historic Places.

Since buying the property, the alliance has been converting space to
offices for its 10-person staff, meeting rooms, an activity area and
resource center.

The farmstead is the third headquarters for the group in its 15-year
history. For the first five years, it was headquartered at Whitesbog
Village in Pemberton Township.
