I hate to sound so cynical, but does it really matter? Isn't it all just a game of moving money between different pockets? In other words, if all the gas tax is dedicated to the roads, what's to stop them from cutting other monies that are currently being spent on roads?

They are just trying to appease the public with this gas tax. Nobody is happy with the increase but if they promise it goes where they said it was for most people will just say ok. Boyd is abosolutely right. This increase is to off set a $4 million deficit. If all the funds stay the same then it helps. If all the gas tax goes towards the transportation fund and the current funding for transportation is cut we will be back to square one.

It's all just a shell game, and to have it as a constitutional amendment is not the best of idea's. Glad to see my rep was the only one to vote against the question.

On the surface, it makes sense to me to tie gas tax revenue to road projects, not that the proposed amendment does this. I see this specific question, if passed, having more impact on the legislature rather then we the people since it will make a significant sum of money much harder to touch for their flavor of the day cause, not to mention having to fill the any hole created by no longer being able to divert funds to other areas.

I'm going to guess in the coming years we will see those in Trenton using a much broader definition of what 'Transportation' is in the Garden State if the amendment passes.

You need to remember "transportation" means SO MUCH MORE than roads.

And a "transportation project" may result in producing nothing more than an 900 page study that will sit on a shelf.

Perhaps some additional "canoe signage"? :D

There is an interesting reader comment about the signage in the PineBarrens Tribune about them. "Canoe signage is an unnecessary expenditure" However, I can't find it on their site online.

It's starting to make sense why we are being asked to dedicate the revenue from the gas tax. Who wouldn't want a credit card that required someone else to pay the bill....

From the Press of Atlantic City:
"It also underscores an important point about the ballot question: It asks voters to constitutionally dedicate gas tax funds but does not specifically mention the borrowing will reach $12 billion. When voters required lawmakers and the governor to seek voter approval for borrowing in 2008, they also approved an exception for constitutionally dedicated funds, which is what the question seeks to do."
