The Bald Eagle has always been a symbol of America's freedom.
On Tuesday, a certain Bald Eagle was a symbol of New Jersey's remarkable resurgence of this majestic bird.
The now rehabilitated and released Bald Eagle was picked up approximately a week ago by New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife staff.
"He was in West Cape May," said Kathleen Clark, principal biologist for the Endangered and Non-game Species Program. "A woman called and said she had two eagles on the ground in her yard."
After the woman described the birds and Clark decided the woman was correct in her identification of them being Bald Eagles, she began her journey to Cape May.
"They were in a suburban neighborhood with their talons locked together," Clark said.
By the time Clark arrived, the birds had been locked together for at least two hours.
"This one had blood on his face," she said. "The other one, the healthier one, finally let go and flew away when I approached them."
Sarah Tegtmeier of Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research Inc. said the eagle had several puncture wounds and bruising under its wings.
"It was a quick turn-around for him," Tegtmeier said. "The shorter we keep them in captivity, the better, but we won't release them until they are ready."
