Hello, new to the pines and new to the forum, but I love it! Quick question. Last year I explored and photographed the area of pines between Caranza road and Hammonton. This year my goal is to do the area between Caranza road and the Parkway. I noticed on the maps an area below Warren grove just to the west of 539 what looks like a runway and possibly a military area? Is this a restricted area? A road named bombing range road. Can I accidently wander in from the back dirt roads? Should I be concerned about this ? Thanks in advance for any advise.

That be the Warren Grove Bombing Range used by the NJ Air Guard.It is restricted though you can drive right up to the gate and watch the bombing runs if you like.The area between the range and 539 is Wildlife management are owned by the state and open to exploration.It is some of the best pine plains in the barrens,there are also some nice plains east of 539 too.The range is signed appropriately and you will not wander onto government land without being aware of it in this area though to the north south and east of the range this is possible if your bushwacking.It is not signed very well there off the roads.When i say plains I am referring to a pitch pine scrub oak forest that is anywhere from hip to chest high in this area.The area burns frequently and just burnt bad a few years ago.they spring right back though so no worry.This is the Barrens "Big sky country"...Enjoy

The property is federal land so I would suggest you be careful where you go. There are signs on many of the sand roads in the area, and even gates in some places. They have signs saying deadly force is allowed.
You should vist Bombing Range Road around 10 to noon or so and you can watch the A10 Warthogs practice killing tanks. Drive up to the gate and park in the area before it. Do not go into the gate.

shoot away if you can stand the noise.A lot of people go ouyt there just to watch them,I personally find the jets irritating and prefer to go out there on sundays when they are not training.It;s ashame they had to build the range right in the middle of the best plains the barrens has.Then again if the Air Guard keep setting the woods on fire every few years like they have been we'll never have to worry about loosing the plains.

Ah, to be 29 and know everything !!!!!! Maybe someone should put a muzzle on you, because you OBVIOUSLY have no idea what you are talking about. The Air Guard has been on the range for over 63 years.
While it is true that on occassion they have mishaps that turned into wildland fires, I rest much easier at night knowing that the men and women serving in our armed forces have a place to train. Since the fire of May 15, 2007, the Air Guard is not allowed to use ANY device that can cause ignition in the woods. No more incendiary type munitions are allowed. I'm hoping that the posters on this forum feel the same. Over the past decade, NJFFS has worked hand in hand with the range to eliminate fire hazards section by section. This year 1300 acres were prescribe burned on the Northwest corner of the range, South of Lake Oswego. This created a superb fire break for the Lake Oswego area.
So before you go condemning people or actions, you might want to actually have some facts.......there's an old saying........."PUT THE BRAIN IN GEAR BEFORE ENGAGING THE MOUTH !"........or didn't you learn that while playing with your stocks????

Why do you have to but people down so quickly.It is good we have different views but there are also ways of doing it.
Uncalled for and hilarious. I don't think a civilian can own property any closer to the range than dragonjco.... and I live in Warren Grove.

I try to get there at sunrise (usually on Friday's), enjoy the quiet for a while, watch the A-10's untill my hearing is gone, then fish the rest of the day at Chatsworth. And to add to the picture taking question, the planes are too fast, I can never seem to get a good picture. That's what I keep telling my good freind Ivan, anyway.

Very cool photo Pancoast. I always find it interesting to note the difference between the speeds of light and sound when watching the A-10s fire. You see that puff of smoke and then hear the guns up to five or more seconds later.
Sound travels at ~768 miles per hour. 768/3600 = .213 miles per second. So if it takes 5 seconds to hear the sound, the plane is about a mile away.

Anyway, This is an awesome photo. I've had the honoe of being about 100' away from them when they strafe the bombing range. To see those 20mm cannons hit a tank and lift it off the ground is very humbling (and glad I'm not being aimed at).
You definitely need a long lens.

Vollie... really now. Is it necessary to pollute every thread like this? Please give it a rest and agree to disagree or move on. You will find plenty of open minded people on this site who will listen to well reasoned opposing points of view and possibly even change their minds. But you will also find very little sympathy for trolls.
Being a vet myself I am glad they train and patrol the coast and am all for a strong defense,much stronger then the current administartion i believe would like us to have.In any case I do wish they had another place to train but then wherever that was someone living there would wish they'd go somewhere else so I get I just gotta eat the noise and live with it.I already live with that blasted new raceway within earshot of my house with the windows closed and the air conditioner on and I'm three miles away.That raceway on the other hand is non essential and I will gloat my rear off if I live long enough to see it go the way of the dinosaurs.Let the A-10's stay.I still have sunday to enjoy peace in the plains.

Apologies for getting you going vollie.
Stock trading is going great, giving me plenty of money to blow on 3.50 cent gas to the go enjoy the pines, and donate to conservation organizations.
I had to do some fieldwork in the plains this spring and summer and it was the first time I've ever spent alot of time in them, truely an awesome place, made me feel like the ocean was always going to be around the next bend.
