Revisiting The Marble Spung And Other Locations

All,

Bob, Jessica, Buddy, and I did some plant searching and exploring today, and visited the Marble Spung and a few other places. Here are a few from our day.


Jessica went shopping but got stuck heading down an aisle.

It appears to be a red belly, and always interesting to see.

Bob and Buddy exploring the far side of this wonderful little lake that had the vegetation around it completely burned in the big Warren Grove fire.

I started walking through it and the water went over my knee highs, so I decided to just keep going. Jessica was in sneakers and was following behind me.

I was up to my waist a few times. The water was crystal clear.

Bob was far away and I could hear his camera turning on, or so I thought. After 15 minutes of hearing his camera turn on I realized it was my phone buzzing in my pocket....under water. I am currently using Jennifer's old phone with my card in it. And my wallet is in front of the air condition vent.

I almost lost my Buddy dog on the way home. He insisted in getting out and running on Webb's Mill Road. He was ahead of me about 30 yards and I saw him jump off towards the center of the road as if a firecracker went off or somebody kicked him. It was a large rattlesnake. Buddy either stepped on his head, or just kicked sand on his head. He struck out at Buddy, and must have missed cause Buddy is here and breathing. I was worried, but I could not see a bite.

Here he is after I stopped. He was very angry, note his rattle is up and it was rattling.

He was pretty big and intimidating. Note the sand on his head. He seemed okay though.

Wow! Glad to hear Buddy is in good shape. Just think of all the times he goes missing from us and always comes back. One time he may get bit and we would not have time to get him help or find him. Scary!

I can just picture Murphy wanting to play with that snake.
Other than that, it looks like you guys and gal had a good day. It was a beautiful day to be in the woods.

I was home this weekend for a gun club picnic and me and Mike just got back from doing some water retrieving work with Murphy and Hank.
We ended the night with a cold one by a pond in the big woods with a few coyotes howling in the distance.

Summer in the pines is a thing of beauty.

Wonderful trip!..... albeit the rattlesnake encounter I was once walking with my dog and saw her do the same dance, not realizing that she had come upon a Northen Water Snake.....and she was on a leash to boot. We saw the snake after her jump. She developed an infection from the undetected puncture wound about two days later. Antibiotics did the trick, but who would have guessed?



Also, I would have never guessed it as the same image of Marble Spung that I am familiar with. Much different in August...

Yes, it truly is. I was just thinking that I could have taken a little swim in Governors Pond, then cracked a cold one, then threw a brat on the grill, and........great stuff!

I'm surprised at how much water are in those spungs this time of year. The ground water levels must be healthy.

Gabe.The water levels in the streams such as wading and tulpehocken are atrociously low.the wading cannot be floated above the tulpe and even below is very scratchy for a mile or more.Many of the vernal ponds here(cumberland county) still have water in them but I don't think it's the water table keeping them up.I think many of their bottoms must have clay or silt keeping them tight.Evaporation is slowly emptyting them but they were so full from the past spring and winter that their far from empty yet but the water table seem to be at a normal summer low though the vegetation doesn't seem to be suffering as it usually is this time of year with this little amount of rain.usually all the sycamores in town are yellow and dropping their leaves by now and their not som maybe the water tables is really well off though you can't tell that by the wading.

Phone is now working properly. I had to take it apart to dry it.
