All,

If you have not tried to access Black’s Bridge from 539 in a while, you are in for a surprise. The road just south of the boardwalk is blocked by a new curb.

I have always noticed that if they pave a road and intended to put a second layer on it, which would raise the road to the proper level, the road would normally be rough and unfinished. But the road appears to be quite smooth and they even painted the lines on it. I would say the paving is complete and your only option is to take an alternate route unless they alter the road in this area. Obviously, if you have a vehicle that is high enough to drive over it you will have no problem, but if your vehicle is not be careful you don’t do serious damage or stop quickly there and get hit from behind.

There actually are new curbs all along 539 which only occur on the hills. They appear to be trying to divert the water to alleviate flooding on the road.

And while at Black's Bridge I took the bottom photo to complete another "Then and Now".

I saw the road crew putting the curbing in a few weeks back, i had to do a double take when i saw that particular entrance basically blocked off, i am not going up it, i am not going down it.

What a big difference the road condition is at Black's Bridge.

Looks like somebody screwed up when they read the new grades the survey crew shot for the road and curb, it’s not hard to do. I used to work for a survey company.

Bob said he drove over it with no problem. I had second thoughts :)

I'm not sure that I've ever been there... where does that road intersect Rt 539?

Right before the boardwalk at Webbs Mill heading north. You can walk to it in 30 seconds from the boardwalk.

Wow, talk about dumb planning. That curb needs to be demolished. Some cars may be able to drive over it though, 4x4s should have no problem.
That's still better than most dirt roads on Long Island though, which are blocked by gates consisting of a bar between two wood posts.

I just looked at the picture for another time. If you notice (I didn't the 1st time), the area of the curb that blocks the road is at a lower grade/level than the actual curb. This tells me that either 1) they plan on putting more surface (higher) on the road to raise it higher or 2) they feel that they did put a driveable entrance way to the road.

That is correct, but the road appears to be finished. They never would paint the double lines if they had planned on adding more to the surface.

The curbs are for drainage it is obvious. They must be having a problem with the road flooding for some reason. One section of curb leads directly to a large pipe to divert the water. So maybe they felt if the curb was lower it would not serve it's purpose and the water could just wash into the road. Lowering the curb just that amount allows people like Bob with a 4x4 to drive right over it as he did. It doesn't help me much.

90% of the time i always took the next road north on rt.539 past where the new curb is.

When we left each other last saturday i took as you know the road south that we were on to just west of the fire tower site, clear sailing all the way.
