Hawks, owls, other predators can get hit by cars when they land on the road to eat dead animals. We had this happen last year when a recently fledged redtail got hit in front of our house. The smaller birds aren't seen by drivers.
I stop when I can avoid becoming roadkill my ownself, and drag or kick the carcass off the road.

I got hit by a Red-tailed in flight on the NY Thruway near Albany. I could see it coming just before it hit the passenger side window.
