I was saddened to learn of Gene's passing. I worked for him for a short time doing wetland delineations and endangered species searches when he had his consulting firm. Most of my early identification of pine barrens plants and animals was learned from him. At the time he was also serving on the Cattus Island County Park Advisory Council, which is a group of experts in various fields who advise the park administration on the management of the park. When a position opened up at the park he put in a good word for me and was instrumental in my hiring. When Gene and Ted Gordon taught their Rutgers continuing education courses on wetland plant ID at Cattus or Wells Mills, he always offered interested park staff the chance to tag along. He never missed an opportunity to help advance environmental education. He will be missed by countless people in the environmental field whose lives he touched.
