All,

The better half brought up the subject of heading to the pines today, and I am not one to pass that up. So we did just that, and here are a few photo’s of that short adventure.

After visiting a few places, we were heading past the logging area on Chatsworth Road near Bear Swamp Hill, and the machine that is used to cut the trees was there along the road. It is quite an interesting piece of equipment for sure! It pulls up to the tree and grabs it with the claws while the carbide tipped saw cutter rotates at the base and easily cuts it down. It then can drive forward with the tree in a vertical position, or rotate it 90 degrees.

Since I sharpen carbide at work all the time, I can say with experience this cutter needs some serious sharpening. Notice the rounded edges giving it a negative rake. A diamond wheel would fix that quite nicely :)

Then a monument nearby on a property corner.

And has anyone viewed this before?

It is located here.

Freerider and Bobpbx .... We then went to the FAA tower to see if we could photograph a female Broom Crowberry; however, it appears to me we will have to wait until next year, at least at this location. And when we arrived there were a group of individuals, male and female, with their cars parked at the end of the road from the tower. And riding around in the Broom Crowberry were none other than ATV’s. They were having the time of their life until they saw us, and they then headed into the woods and soon arrived behind us back at the cars. I did not go up to the area there were riding in to see how much, if any, damage had occurred.

God help them, for they know not what they do.

I had not seen Crowberry near the tower. i know there is allot of hudsonia.

The crowberry do seem to thrive in disturbed places.

True they know not what they do....... neither did I in some areas of life until I was enlightened.........

Did you get to go to the tower area on Bear Swamp Hill ?

Jim

Jim,

I drove right by it and went to the FAA tower. I had been traveling for a while and my wife was starting to not feel well so I hit the FAA tower and Bombing Range Road and headed home. Both Jessica and her are now sick. Jessica was sick about three weeks ago and yesterday it returned. She looks really bad.

Glad you got your wife out in the pines. Sorry to hear that she and Jess are sick. Seems something is going around. Also, that is a shame about the ATV riders and the Broom crowberry. Ignorance is certainly one of the pine barren's worst enemies.

Good report Guy. But that logging machine brings back some bad memories. I watched one just like it clearcut the woods next to my old home in Medford in preparation for building two McMansions. After cutting, they fed the trees into a huge wood chipper - they didn't even save any of them for lumber or firewood. When they were done, all that was left of the woods was a big mountain of wood chips.

FWIW, that was 2004. They finally sold one of the McMansions about 6 months ago, the other one is still empty. What a waste...

From what I have heard they use that wood to make things such as hospital gowns.

Such an interesting thread, Guy, especially the homemade grave (?) marker. What were the sticks tied together with? Was it off the road/path or close by?

I hate to hear about this sort of thing.
Ignorance/carelessness/stupidity shouldn't be permitted to be bliss, but what's the solution?

Jeff's right:
Ignorance is certainly one of the pine barren's worst enemies.Jeff

I hope Jessica and your wife are feeling better by now. It's so discouraging to get the same bug over again!

Glo,

It was some sort of rope. It is right along the road so I noticed it as I rode by. Not sure why I never noticed it before since they seemed semi old. And my wife and Jessica are feeling much better. Thanks!
